Shizuoka 4 Years Old 2017 is one of the highest-strength expressions from Gaiaflow's Shizuoka distillery in Shizuoka prefecture, a single cask single malt distilled in 2017 and bottled for an event market in 2021 at 64.6%. This cask strength Ex-Bourbon release sits at the vigorous end of the distillery's output and offers an unfiltered view of the spirit as it was when it emerged from the wood.
Ex-Bourbon maturation over four years delivers vanilla, fresh tropical fruit, a light oakiness and the cereal warmth that typically marks the Shizuoka house style. At this strength the spirit is assertive on the palate, though the distillery's characteristically clean distillation, shaped by cedar washbacks and the careful selection of raw materials, keeps the alcohol from dominating. Water is welcome and opens the fruit considerably.
