Shinobu Newborn

Shinobu Newborn is a single malt whisky from the Shinobu Distillery in Niigata prefecture, a cask-strength bottling from 2023 that presents the distillery's new make at its earliest released stage. At 50%, this is an uncompromised look at what the distillery puts into wood, and the NAS designation reflects the honest youth of the liquid rather than an attempt to obscure it.

Maturation draws on two cask types: first-fill bourbon barrels, which at this stage of ageing give fresh vanilla, coconut and light caramel in pronounced, unintegrated form, alongside mizunara Japanese oak, whose sandalwood and incense character can emerge even at young ages when the wood contact is active. The flavour profile lists vanilla, which aligns squarely with the first-fill bourbon influence. Cask strength bottling preserves the full intensity of both wood contributions, making this a bracing and direct expression of where the Shinobu Distillery is heading.
