Description
Serragghia work on Pantelleria, a small volcanic island between Sicily and Tunisia, farming biodynamically with minimal intervention. The grape is Zibibbo, the local name for Muscat of Alexandria, prized for its intense floral and citrus aromatics. Here it is made as a natural orange wine, fermented and aged for three months on its skins in clay amphorae. The volcanic soils and intense island sun, tempered by constant sea wind, give ripe fruit with concentration and a saline thread. Skin contact extracts phenolics, pigment and a measure of tannin from the grape skins, turning the wine golden and adding structure and grip that frame the grape's natural perfume, while the porous amphorae allow gentle oxygen exchange without imparting oak. The wine is deep golden in the glass. The nose is expressive, with orange marmalade, white flowers, apricot and rose over dried herbs. The palate is dry and textured, the floral fruit balanced by a savoury, slightly tannic finish and a salty mineral lift. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
