Description
Schoenheitz Pinot Noir comes from the Munster valley in Alsace, where the family farms steep slopes around Wihr-au-Val by organic methods. The vineyards sit on granite and sandy soils in a cool, sheltered corner of the region, a continental climate where Pinot Noir ripens slowly and keeps its acidity and aromatic precision. Cool-climate Pinot of this kind is naturally light in body, with bright red fruit and a fine, savoury frame rather than the depth of warmer regions. The wine is aged for twelve months in oak barrels, where gentle oxygen exchange rounds the tannins and adds a light spice without covering the fruit. It is a bright cherry red with garnet highlights, intense on the nose with kirsch, small red berries and redcurrant, lifted by a floral note and a touch of pepper. The palate is light and fresh, the tannins fine, the finish clean and slightly earthy. This is certified organic farming reflected in the glass. Serve at 15 degrees Celsius. It suits roast duck, chicken and mushroom dishes.
