Description
Scar of the Sea Vino de los Ranchos is a Pinot Noir from the Santa Maria Valley in California, made by Mickey and Gina Giugni with a natural, additive-free approach. The valley runs east to west and draws cold air and fog off the North Pacific, and this maritime influence is central to the wine: the long, cool growing season ripens Pinot Noir slowly, holding acidity and giving a fresher, more savoury style than warmer California sites. The vineyards are farmed organically and sustainably. Ageing was relatively short, seven months in French oak barrels, enough to round the tannins through gentle oxygen exchange and add light structure without covering the fruit, in keeping with the low-intervention winemaking. The colour is medium ruby. The nose shows cherry and red berry fruit with a floral lift and an earthy, peppery edge. The palate is fresh and balanced, with fine tannins, bright acidity and a savoury finish of dried herbs and plum. It is ready to drink and best enjoyed in its youth. Serve at 15 to 16C. It suits roast poultry, duck, salmon and mushroom dishes.
