Scar of the Sea is the natural-leaning project of Mikey and Gina Giugni, founded in 2012 on California’s Central Coast. This single-vineyard Bassi Pinot Noir is light and fresh, with wild strawberry, red cherry and a fine, savoury frame.
Description
Scar of the Sea was founded in 2012 by Mikey and Gina Giugni in San Luis Obispo on the Central Coast of California, working in a natural, low-intervention style and farming organically and sustainably. This Pinot Noir comes from the Bassi Vineyard, a coastal site close to the Pacific where cool ocean air and marine-influenced soils slow ripening and preserve acidity, keeping the wine light in body and bright in fruit rather than rich and extracted. The cool, foggy climate and proximity to the sea are central to the fresh, perfumed style. Fermented with native yeasts and aged ten months in barrel, the wine sees gentle oxygen exchange that softens the tannins and adds a light savoury depth while keeping the delicate Pinot fruit intact, in line with the natural approach. The colour is pale, bright ruby. The nose is fresh wild strawberry and red cherry with a floral, rose-petal lift and a touch of wild herbs. The palate is light and lively, with fine tannins, crisp acidity and a clean, savoury finish. Serve cool, around 14 degrees, in a Burgundy glass. A versatile red for poultry, duck and mushroom dishes.
