Description
Scala Dei Masdeu is a single-variety Garnacha from the historic Scala Dei winery in the D.O.Q. Priorat. The grapes come from high vineyards between 720 and 800 metres, on calcareous clay rather than the slate licorella found across much of the region, spread among the winery's many small plots where the vine is tended almost metre by metre. The altitude brings cool nights and a strong diurnal range that preserve acidity and freshness despite the hot, dry Mediterranean climate, while the limestone soils lend tension and a fine mineral lift. The wine is aged twelve months in large oak foudres, whose size means a gentler, slower oxygen exchange than small barrels, softening the tannins and adding texture without overt oak flavour, holding ripe Garnacha fruit at 15 per cent. The colour is a deep ruby. The nose shows ripe cherry and plum over dried herbs, black pepper and liquorice, with a stony mineral edge. The palate is full bodied and structured, warm yet fresh, with firm fine tannin, bright acidity and a long, mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted. It suits roast lamb, grilled red meat and game.
