Scala farms native Gaglioppo in the Cirò denomination of Calabria, working respectfully and organically. This Classico Superiore ages in cement alone, keeping the fruit fresh and direct, with red cherry, wild berries, dried herbs and a savoury, mineral finish.
Description
Scala is a Calabrian family estate in Cirò, on the Ionian coast, making wine since 1949 from native vines and a respectful, organic approach. This Classico Superiore is made from Gaglioppo, the region's traditional red grape, grown on warm coastal hillsides near the sea. The Mediterranean climate ripens the fruit fully, while sea breezes and the grape's pale colour and brisk acidity keep the wine fresh and savoury rather than heavy. Unlike the Riserva, this bottling ages entirely in cement tanks, an inert vessel that allows the wine to settle without taking up any wood flavour, preserving the primary fruit and the grape's natural freshness. The result is a direct, traditional Cirò. The colour is bright, medium ruby. The nose shows red cherry and wild berries, with dried herbs, earth and a faint rhubarb tang. The palate is medium bodied, fresh and lively, the tannins light and fine, the finish savoury and clean with a mineral edge. This is an early drinking red that rewards a light chill in warm weather. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. It suits grilled chicken, lamb and tomato-based pasta.
