A 15 year Savanna traditional rum from Reunion at 52.7 percent with an Armagnac finish, dry and assertive with dried and tropical fruit, smoky oak, grapes and spice, a bold molasses sipper for adventurous palates.
Description
This Wild Island Edition Mer is a 15 year aged Savanna from Reunion, distilled in 2003 from molasses rather than cane juice, so it sits in the distillery's traditional family rather than its agricole one. Bottled at cask strength, 52.7 percent, it is finished in Armagnac casks for an extra layer of fruit and spice.
Column distilled from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon wood before the Armagnac finish, it leans dry and wood-forward: caramel, grapes and a clear brandy-cask influence on the nose, with grapes, smoky oak and raisin on the palate. The finish is spicy and roasted with dried fruit and that vinous Armagnac edge. Assertive and a touch bitter, it is not built to please everyone, but rewards drinkers who enjoy drier Savanna and brandy-cask finishes with plenty of fruit, smoke and spice.
