A Reunion Grand Arome from molasses, fifteen years in ex-bourbon oak and bottled at a towering 66.5%, a wild fruit bomb of ripe strawberry and sour cherry, olives and menthol over dry, intense oak.
Description
This Wild Island Edition Lave is Savanna's Grand Arome, its high-ester, long-fermentation molasses rum rather than its cane-juice agricole, a distinction the label rewards reading. From 2003 and bottled at a single-cask strength of 66.5%, it is the funkiest side of the distillery turned up to full volume.
Fifteen years of tropical maturation in ex-bourbon oak gives deep colour and a powerful, dry wood frame, but the esters steal the show: ripe strawberry, sour cherry and overripe fruit on the nose and palate, with olives, menthol and a solventy edge running through. The finish is long, fruity and woody, strawberry and overripe fruit lingering. Unsweetened and bottled at towering strength, this is an intense, characterful sipper for seasoned drinkers who like full-proof funk, best in small pours with water on hand.
