Savanna Rhum Vieux Traditionnel

Savanna in Reunion makes agricole, molasses and high ester Grand Arome rums, and this Rhum Vieux Traditionnel is the classic molasses side of the house, distilled on a column still rather than from cane juice. Aged seven years and bottled at an easy 43%, it is the distillery's everyday aged expression, balanced and very drinkable.

Seven years in ex-bourbon oak bring yellow and tropical fruit, apple strudel and a honeyed sweetness over dry oak spice and vanilla, with a faint glue note hinting at the Savanna character and a dry, barrel led finish. Although it is molasses rather than agricole, it keeps a fresh, lightly fruity feel that drinkers often describe as almost agricolish. The whole thing reads as balanced and approachable, more nuanced than its strength suggests. It makes a solid stepping stone for those building a palate, an honest, well made sipper that drinks neat without fuss.
