A high-ester Reunion rum from Savanna’s Lontan line at a punchy 57%, throwing solvent, pineapple and grassy esters with a phenolic, briny-bitter palate of olive and overripe fruit, intense and uncompromising.
Description
Savanna, working on Reunion since 1870, makes several very different families of rum, and the Lontan name marks its long-ferment, high-ester style rather than a clean agricole. This 2018 Lontan 57 is bottled at a forceful 57% and aimed squarely at drinkers who chase funk.
The nose is loud with solvent and ester, ripe pineapple and cut grass tipping toward varnish, the hallmark of a heavily fermented spirit. The palate is concentrated and phenolic with a savoury, briny edge, and the finish turns bitter and tannic with green olive and overripe fruit. This is an intense, polarising rum where the ester drive is the whole point, one for the funk hunters to explore neat or to lend backbone to a serious cocktail rather than a gentle introduction to island rum.
