A light, grassy blanc from Reunion’s Savanna, pressed from fresh cane juice and leaning floral and herbaceous with lemon peel, thin and mineral on the palate, an easy 40% built more for cocktails than contemplation.
Description
Savanna has distilled on Reunion since 1870 and runs three very different families of rum: agricole from fresh cane juice, molasses rum, and the intensely funky high-ester Grand Arome. This Intense Blanc sits in the agricole camp, made from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice rather than molasses, and it is the lighter, more restrained face of the distillery.
The creole column keeps grassy, vegetal congeners in the spirit, giving a floral, hay-like nose with lemon peel and a thin, mineral palate that turns faintly smoky and banana-tinged on the finish. This is a gentle, easygoing white rather than one of Savanna's punchier ester-driven bottlings, so it shines in light grassy mixers and Ti Punch rather than as a stand-alone sipper. Anyone chasing intensity should look to the distillery's Grand Arome side instead.
