Description
Sassotondo is the estate Edoardo Ventimiglia and Carla Benini built in Sovana, in the Tuscan Maremma, after leaving careers in Rome in 1990 to develop a then little-known area between cliffs and volcanic soils. Monte Calvo is a single-variety Ciliegiolo, a Tuscan grape whose name comes from the cherry it so clearly tastes of, giving light, bright and juicy reds. The Maremma is coastal Tuscany, with warm Mediterranean days, sea-influenced nights and the area's distinctive volcanic tuff soils, free-draining ground that holds freshness and lends a savoury, mineral character to the fruit. The wine is organically farmed and aged 12 months in large oak foudres, a traditional vessel whose slow, gentle oxygen exchange rounds the tannin and adds little overt oak, keeping the wine's fresh, fruit-forward character. Expect a bright ruby colour and a nose of red cherry, strawberry and plum over dried herbs and a peppery, earthy note. The palate is medium-bodied and juicy, with soft tannin, fresh acidity and a savoury finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, lightly cooled if you like. It suits roast pork, poultry and tomato-based dishes.
