Description
Yamazakura 50 Years Old is a blended malt from Sasanokawa Shuzo in Fukushima prefecture, distilled in 1965 and bottled in 2015 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of those original casks. Presented in a 500ml format as an event release at cask strength, it stands as one of the oldest bottlings Sasanokawa Shuzo has ever released from the Yamazakura range.
Fifty years in Ex-Bourbon casks produces a whisky that has moved far beyond the familiar vanilla and toffee of younger bourbon-matured spirit, into territory defined by deep dried wood, old leather, dried fruit and the kind of quiet, settled intensity that only extreme age can bring. At 55% the concentration underlines just how much the wood has shaped this liquid over five decades. A rare and historically significant bottling from one of Fukushima's longest-standing whisky producers.
