A light, affordable Cuban ron at 40%, Santiago de Cuba 8 offers orchard fruit, orange, caramel and honey over noticeable oak, an easy column-still sipper bottled without additives that shines in a Cuba Libre or highball as much as neat.
Description
Santiago de Cuba 8 comes from the Cuban distillery of the same name, made from molasses on a column still and aged in old oak in the island's light ron ligero tradition. Charcoal-filtered, column led Cuban spirit stays clean and bright, and the eight years in wood add colour and a gentle oak frame without weighing it down. Notably, it is bottled without additives.
The nose leans fruity with apple, pear, caramel and honey, the palate follows with honey, caramel, vanilla and coffee, and the finish brings vanilla, pepper, bitter orange and oak before tailing off fairly short. With no added sugar it reads honest and a little drier than the sweetened crowd, an easy daily Cuban pour that many find good value. It works neat for casual sipping and slips happily into a highball or Cuba Libre, where its orange and fruit notes carry well. Set expectations toward easy charm rather than depth.
