Santa Tresa farms organically near Vittoria in southern Sicily. This Nero d’Avola is aged only in stainless steel, keeping its juicy plum, black cherry and peppery, herbal character fresh and unadorned.
Description
Santa Tresa sits near Vittoria in the south of Sicily, where Stefano and Marina Girelli with Massimo Maggio rebuilt the estate from 2000 on organic, vegan and environmentally minded principles drawn from their work in sustainable viticulture. Nero d'Avola is the island's flagship red grape, suited to the hot, dry climate and the calcareous, sandy soils of the southeast, where strong sun builds ripe fruit while sea breezes and cool nights retain freshness. This Insieme bottling is aged only three months in stainless steel tanks, with no oak, a choice that locks in the grape's bright primary fruit and keeps the texture clean. The wine is deep purple, with aromas of ripe plum, black cherry and red berries over black pepper, liquorice and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is full and fruit driven yet juicy, with soft tannin, balanced acidity and a warm, spicy finish that reflects the Sicilian sun more than any cellar treatment. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, and serve slightly cooler in summer. It suits grilled meats and tomato rich dishes.
