Description
Cerasuolo di Vittoria is the only DOCG red in Sicily, and Santa Tresa makes this organic example in its heartland in the island's south east. The blend brings together the two classic local grapes: Frappato for perfume, red fruit and freshness, and Nero d'Avola for colour, body and darker fruit. The vineyards sit on sandy and calcareous soils, which keep the wine bright while the warm climate gives ripeness. The wine spends twelve months in oak, where slow oxygen exchange through the barrel softens the tannin and adds a light spice and vanilla without covering the fruit. The two grapes together give a wine that is medium bodied and savoury rather than heavy. The colour is a clear cherry red, the name cerasuolo meaning cherry. The nose shows red cherry, plum and red berries, with rose, black pepper and a dusty, earthy note. The palate is fresh and medium bodied, with fine tannin, good acidity and a savoury, slightly spiced finish. At 14.5% it stays balanced. Serve at 16 to 17C. It suits roast and grilled meats and earthy dishes.
