Artazu makes this barrel-fermented Garnacha Blanca high in Navarra, part of winemaker Juan Carlos López de Lacalle’s project for the grape. Grown on white calcareous clay at 450 to 600 metres and organically farmed, it shows stone fruit, almond and a creamy, gently oaked texture.

Description
Santa Cruz de Artazu Blanco is a barrel-made Garnacha Blanca from Artazu in Navarra, northern Spain, part of the Artadi group and a project through which winemaker Juan Carlos López de Lacalle explores the potential of this native grape. The vines grow at 450 to 600 metres on white calcareous clay, farmed organically. That altitude brings a wide day-to-night temperature swing that preserves acidity and aromatic detail, while the chalky clay soil gives the wine a firm mineral backbone. Barrel fermentation and ageing suit the fuller frame of Garnacha Blanca, building a creamy, textured palate through lees contact while the oak adds a measured breath of oxygen and a light toast rather than heavy wood. The result is a pale gold wine with a nose of white peach, pear and almond alongside a subtle vanilla and beeswax note, and a broad, dry palate held in line by mountain acidity through a long, savoury finish. Sustainable, respectful farming underpins the fruit. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a larger white wine glass.

Additional information
Pairs with roast chicken, richer white fish and dishes in creamy or buttery sauces. Its weight and nutty edge suit hard cheese such as aged Manchego and cheddar. It also works with roasted root vegetables and mild pork dishes.
