Sangsom Phraya Rum Elements

Rum Elements is an eight year old Thai rum under the Phraya name, produced by the company behind Sangsom, made from molasses, aged in Ex-Bourbon oak and bottled at 40%. Thai rum tends toward the soft, smooth and lightly sweet end of the spectrum, and this sits comfortably there, an accessible tropical sipper rather than a funky or high proof one.

The Ex-Bourbon ageing and tropical climate give a gentle, dessert leaning profile, the nose offering coconut, sugar and molasses with a clear sweetness, then a palate of vanilla, allspice and caramel, and a vanilla led finish. It draws a fair comparison to the softer Barbadian Doorly's style, well made and pleasant if a little quiet, a good entry point for newcomers. There is no firm word on added sugar, but the soft, sweet read suggests an easygoing build. Judged on its own terms it is a smooth, sweetly tropical pour, undemanding and friendly, with just enough spice to keep it interesting.
