Torres has made Sangre de Toro since 1954, a D.O. Catalunya red of Garnacha and Cariñena born from Miguel Torres Carbó’s search for the region’s finest red grapes. Six months in American oak give a warm, fruit driven wine of ripe berries, pepper and Mediterranean herbs.
Description
Sangre de Toro is a Catalan classic from Bodegas Torres, first made in 1954 when Miguel Torres Carbó set out to bottle the true character of the land from its best Garnacha and Cariñena. It is a D.O. Catalunya red built on these two Mediterranean varieties, Garnacha for ripe red fruit and warmth and Cariñena for colour, grip and a savoury edge. The warm dry Catalan climate ripens the fruit fully, while cooler nights and the breadth of vineyard sources across the region keep the wine fresh and balanced. After fermentation it ages six months in American oak, enough to round the tannins and add a light vanilla and spice frame while keeping the fruit to the front. It is certified vegan. The wine is bright and approachable. The nose shows ripe red berries and plum with black pepper, liquorice and a note of dried Mediterranean herbs, and the palate is medium to full bodied, supple and warming with an earthy, savoury finish in keeping with its 13.5 percent alcohol. Serve at 16 degrees. It is a versatile partner for grilled meats and tomato based dishes.
