This Garnatxa comes from a single paratge, Les Salanques, in the steep slate hills of Priorat in Catalonia. Barrel aged from old vines on the region’s llicorella soils, it is a deep, structured red of dark fruit, pepper and mineral grip.
Description
Les Salanques is a named paratge in Priorat, the steep mountain appellation in inland Catalonia, and this Garnacha is grown there under respectful farming. Priorat's defining feature is its llicorella, a slate and quartz soil that forces vine roots deep in search of water, holds heat and gives the wines their dark concentration and mineral grip. The vineyards sit on sharp slopes where low yields and old vines drive depth and structure. The wine ages in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the wood softens the abundant tannins and adds savoury complexity while preserving the fruit. The result is the bold, structured style that defines the region. The wine is a deep, dark ruby. The nose leads with ripe plum and black cherry over black pepper, liquorice, dried herbs and a stony, earthy minerality. The palate is full bodied and firmly structured, with grippy tannins, fresh acidity and a long mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant an hour ahead. It suits roast and grilled red meats, lamb and mature cheeses.
