Sandhi farms Pinot Noir in the cool Sta. Rita Hills, where Pacific fog and ocean wind hold the fruit back. Twelve months in French oak shapes a poised red of red cherry, raspberry and forest floor with bright acidity.
Description
Sandhi works in the Sta. Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County, one of the coolest growing areas on the California coast. The valley opens east to west, so the cold Pacific currents and morning fog described in the regional notes pull straight through the vineyards. That maritime cooling extends the growing season and keeps natural acidity high, which is what allows Pinot Noir to hold its delicate red fruit and floral lift here rather than turning heavy. Farming is sustainable. The wine ages 12 months in French oak, with only a measured amount of new wood so the barrel adds structure and a light savoury spice without masking the variety. It shows a pale to medium ruby. The nose is red cherry and wild raspberry with rose petal and a forest-floor earthiness. The palate is medium bodied and fresh, with fine tannin, bright acidity and a clean, mineral finish typical of the cool site. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees in a wide glass. It is a natural match for roast duck and earthy mushroom dishes.
