A 31 year old Hampden selected by Samaroli from 1990, trading brute funk for elegance and depth, with explosive tropical fruit, banana and pastry over roasted oak, bottled unsweetened at the house’s signature 50%.
Description
Samaroli is the historic Italian purist bottler known for elegant, balanced single casks at deliberately restrained strength, and this 1990 Hampden is a benchmark of that philosophy. Hampden is the great high-ester house of Trelawny, all 100% pot still and long fermentation, but three decades of age reshape that intensity into something deeper and more refined.
Matured in ex-bourbon wood and bottled at 50% without added sugar, it opens with an explosive nose of banana, tropical fruit, pastry and roasted notes, then turns intense, oily and roasted around pineapple, before a woody, earthy, fruity finish. The long ageing trades the raw varnish of a young Hampden for elegance and depth while keeping the tropical funk that drinkers seek, the esters seamless rather than searing. This is a vintage Hampden for the experienced palate, a study in how time tames power without dulling it, and a quietly authoritative pour at its measured strength.
