Samai Gold

Samai Gold is a molasses based pot still rum from Samai, a distillery in Cambodia, bottled without an age statement and aimed at relaxed, approachable drinking. Pot distillation gives it a little more body and fruit than a light column rum, while the young, warm climate spirit leans on honey and caramel rather than deep oak.

The nose runs vanilla and oak with a faint spirit edge, opening to honey, caramel, vanilla and soft spice on the palate with a hint of banana, and a honeyed, woody, lightly spiced finish. It is round, sweet leaning and pleasant rather than complex or intense, showing the youthful softness of a rum still early in its maturation. That makes it an easy, gently funky introduction to Cambodian pot still rum for newcomers, comfortable neat or in simple cocktails, while seasoned drinkers may find the sweetness a touch generous for the depth on offer.
