Sakurao Sherry Cask is a no age statement single malt from Sakurao Brewery & Distillery in Hiroshima, released in 2022 at 50% for the global market. Sakurao opened in 2017 on the Hiroshima coast near Miyajima, and its sherry cask expression is among its most character-forward releases, drawing on cream sherry wood for depth and weight.
Matured entirely in cream sherry casks, the whisky develops notes of dried fruit, cooked mash, honey and malt extract, with an unusual medicinal edge that gives it an individual identity. A grassy, hay-like quality threads through the sweetness, and the coastal Hiroshima air that influences the distillery's style adds a subtle freshness to what is otherwise a richly sherried dram.
