A Martinique agricole under the J. Bally name from Saint James, distilled from fresh cane juice on a creole column into orchard fruit, caramel, clove and leather, unsweetened and softly spiced at 45%.
Description
Saint James has distilled in Martinique since 1765 and is among the island's largest houses, and it carries the historic J. Bally name in its range. This Reserve de la Famille is distilled from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice on a creole column in the island's AOC tradition and bottled unsweetened.
With some oak behind it, the grassy cane base broadens into apple, prunes and caramel on the nose, yellow fruit, orange and clove on the palate, and a spicy, leathery finish, the dry and spice-forward direction of aged agricole rather than sweet molasses richness. At 45% it is balanced and approachable, with enough structure to sip slowly. This is an accessible expression of Martinique rum, led by fruit and spice, that bridges the grassy white style and the deeper aged tier, equally at home neat or in a stirred agricole cocktail.
