A 22 year old Martinique agricole under the J. Bally name from Saint James, long aged in ex-bourbon oak and bottled unsweetened at 45%, dry and oak-forward with roasted wood, coffee, leather, orange peel and a long dry finish.
Description
J. Bally is a historic Martinique brand now produced by Saint James, and this Art Deco release is a 2003 vintage, aged 22 years and bottled unsweetened under the AOC at a gentle 45%. Pressed from fresh cane juice, it shows how an agricole evolves over two decades of tropical-influenced ageing into something deeply woody.
Maturation in ex-bourbon oak drives a dry, oak-forward profile rather than sweetness: a nose of wood, cinnamon, leather and dried fruit, a palate of roasted wood, dried fruit and cinnamon, then a finish of oak, orange, caramel and chocolate. Herbs and a floral lift keep it lively, and the long, dry close is the hallmark of the style. Light, refined and unhurried, it is a contemplative old agricole for slow neat sipping.
