An entry aged agricole from Saint James in Martinique, fresh cane juice off the creole column rested in American oak, leaning spice, honey and dried fruit with caramel and vanilla, a dry, classic everyday pour at 45%.
Description
Saint James has made rum in Martinique since 1765 and ranks among the island's largest agricole houses. American Barrel is an accessible aged expression, distilled from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice on a creole column still, then matured in ex-bourbon American oak under the Martinique AOC, which permits no added sugar.
The oak does the talking here without smothering the cane: the nose offers spice, wood, dried fruit and honey, the palate adds caramel and vanilla, and the finish returns to honey and warm spice. It is a straightforward, well-balanced agricole of moderate intensity rather than a showpiece, the kind of dependable bottle the house built its reputation on. Bottled dry at 45%, it works neat as an introduction to aged Martinique rum or stirred into cocktails that want a cane-forward, lightly spiced backbone.
