A ten year old Martinique vieux from Saint James, unsweetened and wood-forward, showing roasted oak, vanilla and dried fruit over a cane core, with coffee and cinnamon on a dry 43% finish.
Description
Saint James 2001 is a vintage vieux from the oldest of Martinique's agricole houses, distilling since 1765. Drawn from the 2001 harvest and bottled at ten years old, it qualifies firmly as a vieux under the AOC, made from fresh cane juice on a column still with no added sugar. Tropical ageing means the decade in oak shows maturity beyond what the number suggests.
Time in ex-bourbon barrels under island heat builds a roasted, wood-led profile of toasted oak, vanilla and dried fruit, the grassy cane character pushed into a supporting role rather than erased. Cinnamon and a clear coffee note run through the palate, with the finish staying dry, woody and lightly spiced. Honestly built and unsweetened, it is a classic neat agricole for drinkers who like spice and oak over sweetness, and it holds up well alongside dark chocolate or a coffee-led dessert.
