A coffee-steeped Mauritian cane-juice rum from Saint Aubin, pot-distilled on the estate, where roasted coffee dominates the nose and palate over a woody, allspice-edged base, sweet and easy at 40% with the coffee very much in front.
Description
Saint Aubin distills on its own Mauritian estate, and this Rhum Cafe 1819 takes that fresh cane-juice spirit and infuses it with coffee. Mauritius makes cane-juice rum in the agricole spirit without the protected French label, and Saint Aubin runs a pot still, which lends the base a fuller, rounder shape than a tall creole column would give.
Coffee is the headline here, roasted and insistent across both nose and palate, backed by a woody, vegetal frame and a touch of allspice. It carries real sweetness alongside the coffee, so this is a flavoured pour rather than a dry agricole, best read as a coffee-led after-dinner rum at an approachable 40%. The estate's cane base keeps a green, herbal thread underneath, but the roast leads from start to finish and defines the experience.
