Gattorosso is one of Sàgona’s most distinctive reds, blending Sangiovese with Malvasia Nera from the Pratomagno slopes in authentic inland Tuscany. Farmed naturally and aged in steel and cement, it is bright and perfumed with red cherry, plum and a floral lift.
Description
Sàgona has farmed the slopes of Pratomagno since 2012, in the quieter, more agricultural side of Tuscany away from the tourist routes. Gattorosso blends Sangiovese with Malvasia Nera and other local red varieties, the Malvasia Nera adding a floral, faintly spiced perfume to the firmer red-fruit frame of Sangiovese. The vineyards sit at altitude, where cool nights and a marked diurnal range preserve acidity and keep the fruit fresh and lifted rather than heavy. The wine is organic, natural and vegan, made without additives. It spends around ten months in stainless steel and cement, both inert vessels that protect the primary fruit and the floral character, the cement allowing a gentle softening of tannin while steel keeps the wine crisp and bright. Expect a light to medium-bodied red, pale ruby, with red cherry, plum and a rose-petal note over a savoury earthy undertone. The palate is juicy and supple, with moderate tannin and a fresh, slightly herbal finish. Serve lightly cool at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits charcuterie, roast pork and mushroom dishes.
