A port-finished El Salvador column-still rum from 2013, ten years old and bottled unsweetened at 57% by 1423, layering dark fruit, spice and a clear port-cask sweetness over roasted wood with a fruity, spicy, lightly strong finish.
Description
S.B.S is the transparent Single Barrel Selection from Denmark's 1423, and this 2013 El Salvador is a ten year old column-still molasses rum finished in port casks and bottled unsweetened at 57%. The house style is detail-obsessed and additive-free, so the sweetness here comes from the wine cask rather than dosage.
The nose is fruity and spirit-led with wood, confected notes and a vegetal edge. On the palate the port finish makes itself felt, bringing dark fruit and a winey sweetness over roasted oak, while the finish stays fruity and spicy with a barrel grip and a touch of heat. This is a dry rum at heart, lifted but not turned sugary by the port influence, which makes it an interesting daily sipper with more going on than its easygoing first impression suggests. A short rest in the glass helps the slightly firm finish settle.
