Description

Russkaya has been a fixture of the classic Russian vodka segment for decades, produced at the Bryanskspirtprom distillery in a plain, no-frills style. It starts from grain alcohol, which gives a soft, slightly cereal character rather than the fuller body of potato or the bite of pure rye, and is cut with pure water to bottling strength. Careful filtration strips away rough edges and fusel notes, leaving a spirit that is clean and balanced. At 40% by volume it lands at the traditional Russian strength, equally at home neat and well chilled or stirred into a drink.

The nose is clean and close to neutral, with a fine cereal note and a touch of freshness. The palate is balanced, with a faint sweetness, gentle grain spice and a soft body, before a dry, slightly peppery finish. Its restraint makes it a natural Bloody Mary base: 50ml over ice with tomato juice, lemon, a few dashes of Worcestershire and Tabasco, and a good grind of black pepper, where the vodka carries the seasoning without fighting it.
