A softer Hampden blend at 48%, finished in red-wine barrels, bridging bright tropical fruit and light funk with red-wine grape, gentle tannin and a fruity, woody close, an approachable entry to the distillery neat or in cocktails.
Description
Red Barrel is a Hampden bottled by Spirit of Rum for the Rumclub Private Selection line, a blend rather than a single cask, drawn from Hampden stock at around 8.5 years old. It is pitched as the gentler side of Hampden: the Trelawny house is famous for explosive high-ester funk, but this release dials that back and lets a red-wine cask add fruit and structure, making it an easier entry into the distillery's character.
Distilled on the double-retort pot stills from molasses, matured in ex-bourbon oak and then finished in red-wine barrels, it leans bright and fruity: pineapple, tropical fruit and a light funk meet red-wine grape, young wood and gentle tannin, closing fruity and woody with a touch of dried-grape sweetness. Unsweetened and bottled at a manageable 48%, the wine influence is clear without overwhelming the rum. It suits drinkers curious about Hampden but wary of the full DOK assault, and works neat or in fruit-forward cocktails.
