Cocoa, dried fruit, citrus and leather wrapped in dry sherry make this 18 Year Old Port Mourant from Rum Nation a dark, layered single cask off the double wooden pot still, deep and uncomplicated at 57.8 percent.
Description
Rum Nation bottled this Port Mourant in its Rare Rums tier from the 1998 vintage, eighteen years old and influenced by sherry. Port Mourant comes off the double wooden pot still, the heaviest in Guyana, and the Rare Rums line stays dry, so the sherry deepens the spirit rather than sweetening it.
Molasses based and unsweetened, it leans dark and full. The nose mixes sherry, candied fruit, barrel and yellow fruit, the palate brings cocoa, dried fruit, citrus, tea and smoke, and the finish turns toasted and woody with tropical fruit and more chocolate. A faint sulphur tick blows off with air, leaving a dark, uncomplicated and very drinkable PM. At 57.8 percent it has the depth Port Mourant fans look for, a dark, sherried Demerara that doubles as a satisfying daily sipper for experienced palates.
