An eight year old Marie Galante agricole from Poisson Pere Labat, selected by Rum Nation for its dry Rare Rums tier, cask strength at 55.4%, with grassy cane, citrus and anise over roasted oak, dried fruit and chocolate.
Description
This is a Pere Labat from Poisson on Marie Galante, chosen by the Italian bottler Rum Nation for its Rare Rums line, the dry, full-proof end of the range. A 2017 vintage aged eight years, it is distilled from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice with no added sugar and bottled at cask strength, 55.4%.
It is comparatively rare to see Pere Labat bottled by an outside house, and Rum Nation has kept it true to type. The nose is grassy and agricole-forward with citrus and spice, the palate adds roasted oak and anise to the cane character, and the finish brings dried fruit, dry wood and chocolate. At cask strength it has weight and a dry, spice-led grip rather than sweetness. A solid independent take on Marie Galante vieux for drinkers who enjoy dry, woody agricole and want to see this distillery through another bottler's lens.
