A single cask Madeira agricole from Engenho Novo, bottled by Rum Nation at a fierce 65% after Madeira cask ageing, dry and wood-driven with dark chocolate, dried fruit, pepper and a warm, salty, spicy finish.
Description
Madeira is one of the few places outside the French islands legally allowed to call its cane juice rum agricole, and Engenho Novo is its working distillery. This 2017 vintage was selected as a single cask for Rum Nation's Rare Rums line, the dry tier of the house, and bottled at a formidable cask strength 65%.
Matured in Madeira casks, it is firmly oak and fortified-wine led: a nose of wood, dark chocolate, pepper and wintry spice, a palate of oak, dried fruit and dry tannin, then a warm, spicy, salty finish. The cane juice base keeps it from sweetness, and at this strength it needs air and a careful drop of water. A bold, wood-forward agricole for drinkers who want intensity over delicacy.
