A 9 year old Madeira agricole from Engenho Novo, bottled by Rum Nation after Madeira and wine cask ageing at 52%, dry and savoury with dried fruit, tobacco, leather, red wine and black pepper, a wine-soaked take on cane juice.
Description
Madeira is one of the few non-French regions allowed to call its cane juice rum agricole, and Engenho Novo is its distillery. This 2009 vintage from Rum Nation's Rare Rums line, the dry tier of the house, spent 9 years maturing and was finished in Madeira and wine casks, then bottled at 52%.
The wine cask influence is front and centre, giving a savoury, dried-fruit profile rather than anything sweet or grassy. The nose runs to dried fruit, tobacco, raisin and leather, the palate to red wine, dried fruit, leather and black pepper, and the finish stays leathery, salty and nutty. It is a distinctive, wine-soaked agricole with a typical Engenho richness, dry and characterful, suited to drinkers who enjoy spice, leather and fortified-wine depth in their rum.
