Heavy peat smoke and tobacco over dark chocolate, burnt sugar and dried fruit, this 15 year old Diamond was matured in peated whisky casks and lands dry and intense at 59%, a Demerara for smoky Scotch drinkers.
Description
Rum Nation bottled this 15 year old Diamond from 2005 for its Small Batch Rare Rums tier, and it is an unusual crossover. The Demerara base spent its later life in peated whisky casks, and the smoke dominates, turning a Guyanese molasses rum into something that drinks almost like an Islay malt.
Bottled at 59%, it leads with heavy peat smoke, tobacco and a whisky-like char over dark chocolate, burnt sugar and dried fruit, dry and powerful with a long finish and notably smoky empty glass. This is honest about what it is: the peat can easily eclipse the rum, so it suits drinkers who love smoky Scotch and want to see how that character meets Guyanese molasses, taken slowly and perhaps with a cigar, rather than anyone after a classic Demerara profile.
