This Royal Lochnagar, an official release part of the Limited Edition and bottled at 43%. The outturn was 6540 bottles. Royal Lochnagar, founded in 1845 by John Begg on Royal Deeside, beside Balmoral, is one of only three Royal distilleries. Unusually, it is the only Diageo distillery still to fill its own casks on site.

It was worked through small stills and worm tubs that build real weight, for the robust yet refined make Royal Lochnagar is known for. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending honey and vanilla. Without an age statement, the malt feels robust, fruity and well aged. Long ageing builds a sherried richness over the malty Highland spirit. Royal Deeside has been royal country since Victoria and Albert bought Balmoral. For all its tiny size, the make carries a real mid palate weight. Royal Lochnagar is the smallest distillery in Diageo's portfolio, beside Balmoral. John Begg invited his royal neighbours over in 1848, in what is claimed as the first distillery tour.

At 43% it is clean and robust. Toffee, pear and a warm spice sit alongside a quiet vanilla from the refill oak. A baked apple and a warm spice lift it. A fruity, gently spiced finish lingers long. This is the regal little malt of Lochnagar.
