This Royal Brackla, an official release, a 21 year old Highland malt and bottled at 46%. Royal Brackla, built in 1812 by Captain William Fraser in Nairnshire, by Cawdor Castle, is the first Royal distillery in Scotch. Water for the make is drawn from the Cawdor Burn.

Drawn off copper stills with horizontal shell and tube condensers, building the elegant Highland style it is loved for. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. At this age it is polished and full, the fruit folded into a rich, spiced body. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the honeyed, fruity core over time. It is one of only three distilleries permitted to carry the Royal name in Scotch. Queen Victoria renewed the royal warrant in 1838, confirming its regal standing. The house style leans on sherry wood, building a fruity, dried fruit character.

At an approachable 46% it is elegant and balanced. The Oloroso and Palo Cortado sherry give dried fruit, nuts and a dry depth, and green apple and a fragrant lift sit alongside honeyed oak sweetness underneath. It is clean and elegant, the fragrant spirit shining through. A fruity, gently spiced finish lingers long. This is a Highland malt with a royal past.
