Description
Cadenhead's bottled this Royal Brackla single malt, an 11 year old Highland malt from 2011 and bottled at 46%. Royal Brackla was founded in 1812 on the Cawdor Estate of Macbeth fame; it was crowned the first Royal distillery by William IV in 1833. Captain Fraser, late of the army in India, shipped his spirit south to beat the local smugglers.
It was distilled twice on soft Cawdor Burn water, for a clean, floral spirit with a gentle spice. A sherry cask wrapped the fruity spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Younger here, it keeps a crisp, fragrant freshness over light honey. Long ageing builds a honeyed weight over the fragrant Highland spirit. For generations the malt was a backbone of the Dewar's blends before its single malt revival. It is one of only three distilleries permitted to carry the Royal name in Scotch.
At 46% it is clean and refined. The Fino lends a dry, nutty, almond edge, and a gentle vanilla and coconut from the wood runs under a refined, fruity sweetness. A dried fruit and a gentle oak spice give it real depth. Dried fruit and oak spice see out a long finish. This is a fragrant Highland single malt of real finesse.
