Duncan Taylor bottled this Royal Brackla single malt, aged 10 year old from 2014, drawn from cask 9345373 and bottled at 54%. Just 93 bottles were filled. Royal Brackla, founded in 1812 by Captain William Fraser on the Cawdor Estate of Macbeth fame, is the first Royal distillery in Scotch. Captain Fraser, late of the army in India, shipped his spirit south to beat the local smugglers.

It was distilled twice on soft Cawdor Burn water, for a clean, floral spirit with a gentle spice. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the fruit lead. Still young, the malt is clean and fruity with a soft spice. Long ageing builds a honeyed weight over the fragrant Highland spirit. The distillery sits on the Cawdor Estate, whose castle is tied to the legend of Macbeth. Captain William Fraser, an army man returned from India, built the distillery in 1812. Water for the make is drawn from the Cawdor Burn in the northern Highlands.

At a hearty 54% it carries real weight. A gentle vanilla and coconut from the wood runs under a refined, fruity sweetness. A dried fruit and a gentle oak spice give it real depth. The finish is deep, spiced and rounded. This is a fragrant Highland single malt of real finesse.
