A thirteen year old Cuban extra anejo from Ronera Cardenas under the Kawama name, matured in ex-bourbon wood, offering honey, burnt sugar and grape with a sweet, fruity finish, a gentle and surprisingly restrained forty percent sipper.
Description
Kawama Extra Anejo comes from Ronera Cardenas in Cuba, carrying a thirteen year age statement in the island's classic ron ligero tradition of light, clean, blender-led rum. This is the softer, after-dinner end of the Cuban style, built for easy drinking rather than weight or power.
Aged in ex-bourbon casks in the tropical Cuban climate, it leads with a light honey and spice nose before a richer palate of honey, burnt sugar and grape, finishing sweet and fruity. For a Cuban at this age it shows a little more depth and a touch more roasted character than expected, while staying notably less sweet than many of its peers, with wood and spice rather than syrup carrying the back end. At forty percent it is mild and approachable, a relaxed neat pour.
