Ronco Severo works the Colli Orientali del Friuli in north-east Italy, farming naturally and organically. This Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is a deeply coloured native red aged 20 months in large foudres, with dark plum, redcurrant and pepper.
Description
Ronco Severo farms in the DOP Colli Orientali del Friuli, in the province of Udine near the Slovenian border, where the wines are made naturally and certified organic and vegan. The region is sheltered by the Alps to the north and cooled by Adriatic breezes from the south, and its distinctive ponca soil, a marl and sandstone flysch, gives the wines structure and a savoury, mineral character. Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is a native Friulian red, naturally deep in colour with firm tannins and bracing acidity. The cool nights of this northern climate preserve that acidity and the grape's peppery, herbal lift. Made with minimal intervention, the wine spends 20 months in large foudres, where the old wood adds gentle oxygen exchange that softens the structure without imposing barrel spice, leaving the variety's character intact. It pours a deep, dark ruby red with violet lights. The nose is savoury, with dark plum, redcurrant and blackberry over black pepper, dried herbs and an earthy, leathery edge. The palate is full bodied and structured, with firm tannins, high acidity and a long, savoury finish carrying liquorice and a stony minerality from the ponca. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant briefly. It suits grilled meat and earthy dishes.
