Description
Ronco Severo Friulano comes from Stefano Novello's winery in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, in north-east Italy. The vineyards sit on the region's distinctive marl and sandstone soils, known locally as ponca, which break down to feed the vines and lend the wine a savoury mineral backbone. The fruit is grown organically and the wine is made naturally, without added oenological products. The Friulano is fermented on its skins and then aged for twenty-four months in large oak foudres. The long skin maceration extracts phenolics and tannin that give the wine real grip, while the extended barrel ageing allows slow oxygen exchange that develops an oxidative, nutty complexity in place of fresh primary fruit. The colour is luminous golden yellow. The nose unfolds over time, showing dried apricot, orange marmalade, roasted nuts and beeswax, with dried herbs and a honeyed note. The palate is full and dry, with firm skin grip, a savoury core and a long nutty finish. Serve at 12 to 14 degrees in a large glass, decanting if young.
