A so called navy strength Guatemalan at 60% that drinks far milder than its proof, sherry matured and heavy with sweetness, chocolate, caramel and dried fruit, a dark, dessert leaning sipper rather than a fiery one.
Description
Ron Barco de Cargas Navy Strength is a Guatemalan bottling that carries a 60% navy label but pours far gentler than the strength suggests. Distilled from molasses on a column still and matured in sherry casks, it sits in the sweet, dark, dessert leaning Guatemalan camp rather than the dry, spirit forward one. The nose is heavy and oily, sweet with coffee, dark chocolate and a rich, dark character.
The palate is full bodied and sweet, sherry and syrup with chocolate and dried fruit, finishing on more sweetness, chocolate and oak with only a mild alcohol warmth despite the proof. This is honestly a heavily sweetened, dark sipper that stays surprisingly soft, closer in spirit to a Don Papa style sweet rum than to a true high proof navy bruiser. For drinkers who like sweet, sherried, chocolatey rum and want extra body without extra burn, it lands well as an after dinner pour.
