A ten year old Canary Islands cane-juice rum from Ron Aldea, aged in ex-bourbon oak, leaning surprisingly dark with coffee, cocoa, dark chocolate and coconut, soft and rounded at an easy 40%.
Description
Ron Aldea Maestro is an aged cane-juice rum from La Palma in the Canary Islands, where Ron Aldea has long distilled from fresh sugarcane juice in a Spanish-inflected agricole tradition. This ten year old sits at the crossroads of styles, made from cane juice yet reading more like a Spanish-style column rum than a grassy French blanc.
The spirit runs off a column still and matures in ex-bourbon oak, with a profile that turns unexpectedly dark and roasted: coffee, cocoa and dark chocolate on the nose, then coconut and a roasted depth across the palate. There is a soft, faintly sweet impression that reads as a wine-cask or Madeira-like influence, though the cane origin keeps it from feeling heavy. At 40% it is gentle and approachable, a rounded after-dinner pour and an accessible entry to aged cane rum from the Canaries.
