A rare 48 year old Ecuador molasses rum bottled at cask strength 51.8% by Oldman Spirits, unsweetened and surprisingly light, with chocolate, caramel and tea over dry wood, pipe tobacco and herbs, a subtle pour for chasers of old age statements.
Description
This FRC bottling from Oldman Spirits is a single cask Ecuador rum distilled in 1973 and bottled at an extraordinary 48 years old and 51.8%. Very old age statements are scarce in rum, and this unsweetened release offers a chance to taste one, though it stays gentler and more understated than the age and strength might suggest.
The nose carries caramel, vanilla, nuts and chocolate alongside black tea, dry straw and herbs, and the palate is chocolatey and caramelled with a firm alcoholic kick despite a light overall frame. The finish brings wood, pipe tobacco and more chocolate. In the lighter Latin column style, and without added sugar, it reads smooth and subtle rather than powerful, a quietly characterful sipper whose appeal lies as much in its rarity and dry, mature poise as in sheer intensity.
